Studio Notes: September 15th, 2021
In this episode, I start in my workshop to show progress I'm making on constructing my current dimensional panel, and then we go into my studio for a fun light show, revealing the way that different colors of light can drastically change the way a work of art looks--in this case, my spatium piece, "Autumnal II".

OK, I think this is recording. Hey, world Brandon Woods here. So here in Knoxville, it's Maker City Week...I guess. It's the week of the Maker City Summit at the very least. Several years ago, Knoxville rebranded as Maker City. And what that means is that Knoxville is home to a lot of artists and artisans and entrepreneurs and this Make City Summit kind of gives us an opportunity to connect to each other and connect to professionals who can offer us advice on how to make a living doing what we love.
Yesterday, I met with Ron and Kate McKnight. And one thing that they really encouraged me to do was to put more of the I guess, the day to day the... just to show more of my process and what I'm doing, and so here's, here's what I'm working on today, I'm going to turn you guys around here, and I'm going to show you the...what I'm working on here in my wood shop. So. Down here, here is my dimensional frame. DImensional panel in progress. This one is going to be interesting because it's going to be kind of split. So this side is going to be coming down like that. And this side is kind of coming down like that. And there's going to be kind of a break in in the middle where where both sides are kind of meeting. And I've been measuring... I really wish this thing would go down. There we go. OK. You all don't need to see all our junk.
I've been trying to get the right dimensions and everything of this, get it really. Figured out how I can put, I need to put two boards in. I need to put a board that goes down this side and a board that goes down the other side. And I've been using my, my dimensional, my pentahedral dimensional panel calculator that I designed to calculate that, and I'm going to run it through on my...the boards through on my extra-long tapering jig and then on my table saw. And then use my, use my miter saw to cut what will wind up being butt joints that will meet inside of here and inside here for all of that. So. Now I'm going to take you downstairs, I've got something else that I'm working on down in my studio that I want to show you guys too.
OK, now we're downstairs in my studio, and this is "Autumnal II". What I'm working on in here isn't really so much this as the lighting and specifically colored lighting. So let me show you guys what happens. I love the way that. That blue changes, it just kind of falls out then goes almost black and then it glows intensely. Oh. Everything else goes black and blue really, really comes to life. And that's what happens with colored light. So that's one area that I'm really excited about exploring, I think it's pretty exciting. And that's it for kind of what I'm working on today.
So talk to you soon. Till then, do what you love; make good work.
